Boating in Wisconsin? Be Aware of a New Law.

Wisconsin’s effort to require ballast treatment systems on overseas freighters has been stalled for the past six months after stiff resistance from the shipping industry and its advocates.

But state lawmakers have been successful in demanding new rules for recreational boat owners who are unwittingly spreading the freighters’ contagion inland.

In September, the Wisconsin Legislature passed a law that gives any law enforcement officer the authority to order invasive organisms removed from a boat and to fine boat owners who don’t comply.

“Unchecked spread of aquatic invasive species poses economical and ecological peril to Wisconsin waters, and increased enforcement authority is one of the keys to preventing that damage,” said bill author Sen. Robert Jauch (D-Poplar).
